Iban Dayak Mask - Borneo
Iban Dayak Mask - Borneo
On offer is an antique Iban Dayak mask with a beard made of plant fibers, adorned with faded white pigment lines around the mouth, eyebrows, teeth, and framing the face.
Interestingly, besides the 2 holes at the sides to be hung, it features a hole at the center of the mouth, between the teeth, and another perforation, obliquely from the top to the back (see last photo). These may be remnants of additional decorations that once adorned the artifact.
A truly authentic museum-quality piece in good overall condition.
MESUREMENTS: (not including beard) 8.3" x 5.7" x 2.8" (cm 21 x 14.5 x 7). weight: 250 g
The Iban Dayak, often referred to simply as the Iban, are an indigenous people of Borneo, particularly in the Malaysian state of Sarawak and the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan. Historically, they were known as fierce headhunters, with the practice of headhunting being a significant aspect of their warrior culture.
However, the Iban Dayak are not solely defined by their warrior past. They possess a rich and fascinating tribal culture that includes elaborate rituals, ceremonies, and a unique belief system. Their longhouses, communal living structures that can house multiple families, are a testament to their strong sense of community and kinship.
Today, the Iban Dayak have transitioned away from headhunting and embrace more peaceful ways of life, while still preserving their cultural heritage. They are known for their intricate traditional tattoos, music, dance, and remarkable craftsmanship in creating traditional artifacts and textiles. The Iban Dayak are a captivating example of a culture that has evolved over time, blending its vibrant history with the modern world.
