Together, betel and areca stand at the centre of ritual life among Timorese peoples, and they are usually the first thing a visitor is given.
Since 2013 I have been documenting sacred objects and ritual practices, particularly among Atoni and Tetun. This independent research has developed alongside my work as a collector and dealer, and is now taking shape as a book that combines fieldwork narrative, ethnographic analysis, and a catalogue of objects.
