MEASUREMENTS: 18.3" x 15.3" x 6.3" (cm 46 x 40 x 18.3 ).
Polychrome wooden mask, identified as Udoq, with unmistakable marks of age and extensive use. The mask features distinctive, articulated ears with protruding horns at their apex and round mirrors serving as eyes. The ears are hinged and attached to the face through wicker, allowing movement. A stick at the back of the mask provided support for the wearer, who secured it in their mouth during performances. Additionally, the wearer utilized two perforations beneath the mirrors for visibility.The small perforations on the upper part are remnants of additional wicker and feather decorations that were once affixed.
This mask depicts a fusion of a hog's head and a dragon, a unique representation exclusive to the Apo Kayan and Kenyah cultures. These masks held a special purpose, summoning spirits from the wilderness to purify the village.
Dating back to the early 1900s, this particular example is of museum quality, showcasing the skilled craftsmanship of its time
Condition: As mentioned above, the mask shows signs of extensive use and clear aging. The original pigments in red, white, and black have darkened considerably, resulting in a rich, blackish patina. However, the artifact remains very sturdy and stable.
