Batak shaman staff - Tunggal Panaluan - Sumatra, Indonesia

$0.00

This exceedingly rare Toba Batak ceremonial pole, locally known as Tunggal Panaluan, is intricately carved from Cassia Javanica wood by Sumatra Toba Batak. It was created for their rituals, which historically encompassed headhunting, agricultural ceremonies, and the initiation of young men.

These ceremonial staffs are meticulously carved, often featuring representations of humans and animals standing in a stacked formation, reflecting Batak beliefs. The Tunggal Panaluan is employed in traditional ceremonies to either avert disasters or invoke them, harnessing mystical powers. Datu, the shaman, enhances the stick's potency by creating a hole and adding a potion called fertilizer. This practice not only amplifies the mystical qualities but also fosters a sense of identity and belonging within the community.

Overall, the object remains in good condition, with only minor signs of wear and tear. Please take a moment to appreciate the patina and intricate details.

I acquired this Batak artifact from a reliable Indonesian collector a few years ago, Its age is apparent, and it possesses a plausible patina.
