Rooftop finial figure - timor
Rooftop finial figure - timor
Dimensions: 64 cm x 22 cm // 25 inches x 8.6 inches
The statues that adorn the highest part of the Timorese hut roof serve an apotropaic function, protecting the hearth from the influences of malevolent spirits, in addition to serving as decorative elements. They are carved with typical subjects, typically depicting birds, other animals, or ancestors.
I collected this rooftop piece several years ago from the central highlands of West Timor, within the territory of the Atoni tribes. This extraordinary piece prominently features an ancestor figure standing on a threshold, with a rider and horse figure positioned atop the threshold.
One intriguing aspect worth noting is that the ancestor figure is missing both hands, which not only enhances its unique character but also enriches its historical narrative. This artifact bears the authenticity of age and use, serving as a tangible connection to the cultural and historical heritage of the region.
