TIMOR STATUES

Timorese art, relatively obscure within Indonesian tribal art, showcases a vibrant tradition of intricately carved anthropomorphic statues. Rooftop sculptures atop traditional huts are both decorative and apotropaic, often representing ancestor heads, featuring multifaceted representations, birds, or animals, safeguarding dwellings and their inhabitants.

A beautiful genuine representation of an ancestor from the Belu culture, this wooden statue was personally found in situ from a traditional family. Made in hard wood, the figure is depicted in a seated, fetal position, a posture often associated with ancestors. It features a circular headdress, upon which rests a bird, symbolizing spiritual cycle of life and death.

The base of the statue is intricately carved with traditional geometric patterns. The surface of the statue shows signs of aging and wear, and a good age patina . There is a small breakage on the back of the bird's head.
