TRIBAL CARVED SHAMANIC CONTAINER FOR MEDICINES- TIMOR - oceanic art - Indonesia
This intricately crafted wooden container features an ancestral face carved into one side, complete with a wooden stopper secured by a natural fiber cord. At the top of the stopper, there is another ancestral figure depicted in a seated, cross-legged position. Judging from the patina and the tone of the internal wood surface, it appears to have a reasonable age and signs of use.
In the Timorese animist culture, shamanism and the use of medicinal herbs played a significant role. Shamans, known as 'lia nain,' held a revered position as intermediaries between the spiritual and physical realms. They utilized these containers to store and transport various sacred herbs and ritualistic items.
