This wooden statue originates from the island of Nias and represents a male ancestor standing in a rigid and static posture. His legs are slightly spread and bent, giving the illusion of a seated position. He holds two cylindrical objects in front of him, resting on his knees, with each cylinder delicately balanced on one knee due to his bent arms—possibly containers for betel nut. The statue boasts a broad, round face flanked by prominent ears, a pointed nose, a small mouth, protruding eyes, thick eyebrows, and a modest chin beard. Atop his head rests a simple, low cylindrical headdress, and the representation omits the depiction of hair. Nipples and the male anatomy are subtly indicated.

It is believed that this piece dates back to the first half of the 20th century.

In the daily lives of the Nias people, ancestors played a pivotal role. They were thought to be the creators of the world, bringers of fertility and wealth, and protectors against disasters. When an individual passed away, a wooden statue like this one, known as an Adu Zatua (also Adu Zafua), was meticulously crafted to house the spirit of the deceased. These statues served as mediators between the realm of the living and the world of the deities. Regular offerings were made to the Adu Zatua to maintain the figure's continuous support and benevolence, reflecting the profound connection between the Nias people and their ancestral spirits.

While this statue bears witness to the rich cultural heritage of the Nias people, it also bears the marks of its age and history. There is an old loss at the rear of the base, as well as minor cracks on the chest, the back of the head, the left thigh, and the right thigh. Additionally, there is wear on the beard and the top of one of the two containers. These signs of wear and age contribute to the statue's character and authenticity but do not compromise its structural integrity. The statue remains remarkably solid and stable.

We invite you to closely examine the accompanying photos to form your own assessment. The statue is being sold with the accompanying pedestal, as depicted in the pictures.
